World Diabetes Day - The Family and Diabetes

World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007. The campaign draws attention to the issues of importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes in the public spotlight.

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14th. The World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its association members. It joins millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness.

The Family and Diabetes

To mark diabetes awareness month and World Diabetes Day on November 14, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is urging families to learn more about the warning signs of diabetes. New research from IDF has discovered that parents would struggle to spot this serious life-long disease in their own children. Despite the majority of people surveyed having a family member with diabetes, alarming four-in-five parents would have trouble recognizing the warning signs. One-in-three wouldn’t spot them at all.

The findings underline the need for education and awareness to help people spot the diabetes warning signs early.

The warning signs can include excessive thirst, frequent urination, a lack of energy, blurred vision, slow-healing wounds, and numbness in the feet and/or hands.

This November, IDF is urging people to test their diabetes knowledge and learn more. IDF has made an awareness assessment available online at http://discoverdiabetes.idf.org/

World Diabetes Day: Education To Protect Tomorrow

World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007. The campaign draws attention to the issues of importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes in the public spotlight.

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14th. The World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its association members. It joins millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness.

The theme for World Diabetes Day 2021-23 is Access to Diabetes Care. The emphasis for 2022 is “Education to Protect Tomorrow.”

This World Diabetes Day, IDF calls on policymakers to increase access to diabetes education to help improve the lives of the more than half a billion people living with diabetes worldwide.

Millions of people with diabetes worldwide do not have access to diabetes care.

People with diabetes require ongoing care and support to manage their condition and avoid complications.

Medicine, technologies, support, and care are to be made available to all people with diabetes that require them.

Governments to increase investment in diabetes care and prevention.

The centenary of the discovery of insulin presents a unique opportunity to bring about meaningful change for the more than 530 million people living with diabetes and the millions more at risk.

EDUCATION TO PROTECT TOMORROW

What can we do to control diabetes?

Halting the rise in diabetes is possible and goes hand in hand with implementing strategies such as:

Prevention of diabetes and its risk factors, especially overweight/obesity and insufficient physical activity.

Screening for diabetes in the general population and closely monitoring the population at risk.

Improving the diagnostic capacity of health services for diabetes.

Continuous monitoring of people living with diabetes.

The capacity for referral and care at the secondary health care level.

Access to quality diabetes education guarantees adequate training for the healthcare team, people living with diabetes, their immediate environment, their caregivers, and society in general.

Access to essential diabetes medicines and technologies, including insulin.

Information systems for data collection for monitoring and surveillance of diabetes.

The change caused by the COVID-19 pandemic makes it essential to integrate evidence-based digital solutions, such as telemedicine and educational and monitoring applications in diabetes health care.

Diabetes care should be part of preparedness and response to health emergencies. People living with diabetes must be guaranteed the uninterrupted availability of their medicines in situations of this type.

Diabetes currently affects one in ten people worldwide. Understanding the condition is the first step towards managing and preventing it. In conjunction with the World Diabetes Day 2022 focus on access to diabetes education, the IDF School of Diabetes has developed a new online education platform to help people with diabetes and those who care for them to make informed decisions about their condition.

World Diabetes Day
November 14, 2011

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14th. The World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its association members. It joins millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness.

World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007. The campaign draws attention to the issues of importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes in the public spotlight. Diabetes Education and Prevention is the World Diabetes Day theme for the period 2009-2013.

The Global Diabetes Plan was launched on September 18, 2011. The latest figures from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) reveal that currently 366 million people have diabetes, 4.6 million deaths are due to diabetes and US$ 465 billion is spent on care for diabetes. This disease is one of the century’s greatest health challenges and remains on a relentlessly upwards trajectory.

IDF has brought together world experts to develop a coherent framework of action to respond to the diabetes challenge.  These cost-effective solutions for action by governments, health care professionals and the global diabetes community are presented in IDF’s Global Diabetes Plan 2011-2021. (The presentation is available for download or viewing on video at http://www.idf.org/global-diabetes-plan-2011-2021)

The Big Blue Test is a program of the Diabetes Hands Foundation (DHF). It takes place every November 14 (World Diabetes Day). People with diabetes are invited to test their blood sugar at 2 pm (local time), do 14 minutes of activity, test again and share the results.

World Diabetes Day
November 14, 2010

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14th. The World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its association members. It joins millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness.

World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization. Diabetes Education and Prevention is the World Diabetes Day theme for the period 2009-2013. The campaign slogan for 2010 is 'Let's take control of diabetes. Now.'

The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a statement to mark World Diabetes Day 2010. World Diabetes Day comes at a critical moment in the global fight against this deadly disease and a host of other chronic illnesses that are causing both untold, needless suffering and holding back the development of many of the world's poorest countries." Hundreds of millions of people worldwide have diabetes, with most living in low- and middle-income countries. In 2005, an estimated 1.1 million people died from the disease, more than half being women. Diabetes deaths are likely to double in the next 10 years without urgent action. To view the entire statement go to the following link World Health Organization.

About KM Nutrition and Karen Marschel RD, LD, CDE, CLT

Karen's mission is to help women prevent and control diabetes with less medication by finding a food and exercise plan that works for them.

Karen's Philosophy
Even though diabetes medicines are better and more abundant than ever, I feel we are relying on them too much. Our American lifestyle makes it difficult to get enough activity and quality nutrition. To be successful with diabetes control and prevention we need to overcome the temptations of poor eating and no exercise. Long term success is key and diets are not the answer. I feel the best success comes when you have a personalized lifestyle plan combined with an ongoing support system. My job is to help you find that plan.

Professional Experience
For 15 years, Karen has worked with diabetes education programs and individuals. She is a registered and licensed dietitian and a certified diabetes educator. Karen is also a certified pump trainer for Medtronic insulin pumps. Her work experience includes developing community diabetes programs, American Diabetes Association recognized clinic programs and teaching individuals about all aspects of diabetes.

Karen's goal is always to provide professional service that gets results, along with an enjoyable experience!
